Obama Meets CEOs Amid Market Turmoil


President Barack Obama is seeking ideas from the business world on the economy at a meeting with more than a half dozen CEOs this afternoon. The White House describes the meeting as a routine conversation with business leaders, and says it was not scheduled in response to the market turmoil. But spokesman Josh Earnest said he was confident the matter would come up.
“He’s interested in hearing about their perspective on the economy, about (how) … our slow economic recovery has impacted their individual business,” Mr. Earnest said today. “And I think he’s open to ideas. If they have suggestions for things that we can do to get our economy moving, then he’s open to hearing those as well. I think that he expects this to be a genuine dialogue.”
The White House says this meeting is one of several things the president is doing to respond to the market turmoil, including consulting with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and traveling outside Washington to hear Americans’ views.
